Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen Debut on Turnberry Records with “Looking Past You”
Some hooks just don’t quit. For Frank Solivan, Pat Flynn’s “Looking Past You” has been lodged in his head since he first caught New Grass Revival play it live — a slow-burn obsession that finally landed on tape. Now, the two-time GRAMMY-nominated, two-time IBMA Instrumental Group of the Year-winning outfit Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen have made it their own as the debut single on their new home, Turnberry Records.
“That hook is so damn catchy it never left me,” Solivan says. “I’ve been wanting to cut this one for years and we finally did. Man, it felt right.”
Right is an understatement. The band tracked “Looking Past You” the old-fashioned way — live, in one room, four players breathing the same air. You can hear it: natural mic bleed, room energy, the crackle of a band that actually likes each other. Solivan handles lead vocals and mandolin, Mike Munford drops the banjo, Jack Dunlap holds down guitar and low harmonies, and Cody Brown anchors the whole thing on upright bass. Longtime friend and former band member Jeremy Middleton stopped by to add another layer of harmony — a small reunion that gives the recording an extra thump of heart.
The New Grass Revival camp is, in a word, delighted.
“A lovely surprise to hear a great version of Pat Flynn’s New Grass Revival standard, filtered and inhabited by these talented musicians,” says Béla Fleck.
Pat Flynn himself weighed in: “I’m honored that you guys chose to record it, but even more so that you killed on it. No bigger compliment than that the next generation would want to put their brand on a song of mine.”
John Cowan called it “a treasure and a thrill,” while Sam Bush kept it characteristically Bush-like: “Tight and right! Way to go!”
“Looking Past You” is the first taste of Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen’s forthcoming Turnberry Records album, and it makes a case that the band’s next chapter might be their most electric yet. Progressive bluegrass with a rock-tinged pulse, virtuoso chops, and a bone-deep respect for the tradition it’s pushing forward — this is a band that has torn the roof off the Grand Ole Opry and roots music stages from Nashville to Australia, and they show no signs of slowing down.
Old fans will find everything they love. New fans, as the band puts it, “won’t know what hit them.”
“Looking Past You” hits all digital music platforms on June 26th. DJs and media can grab it now — free — via Get It Played.
