Insomnium Emerge From the Netherworlds With “Shadowlife” Video, Announce Album No. 10 for October
Finland’s most reliably melancholic export is back — and no, they didn’t lose their gloom in the woods somewhere between Joensuu and here. Insomnium have just released “Shadowlife,” the first single and video from their forthcoming tenth studio album, due out this October. Consider it the thematic doorway into a record that promises to push the band’s sound into new emotional and sonic territory without ever betraying the misty, Karelian DNA fans have come to love.
“Shadowlife” is classic Insomnium in the best sense: crushing heaviness braided with delicate, almost aching beauty. Vocalist and bassist Niilo Sevänen frames the song as “an elegy not only for a lost beloved, but also for the fading belief that anything beautiful can remain untouched by time.” Translation: grab a black coffee, dim the lights, and prepare to feel things.
Guitarist and clean vocalist Markus Vanhala, meanwhile, is refreshingly candid about the strategy behind the single. “I set out to write an obvious hit — perhaps even a so-called ‘banger’ — to kick things off, but don’t worry: The deeper cuts will follow,” he says. “Album No. 10 is truly a defining milestone for us, so we wanted to honor our history while also introducing some new nuances. Living on the edge.”
The accompanying video, directed by Coldstore Productions and visually anchored by longtime metal illustrator Travis Smith, offers a first glimpse into what the band is calling the Netherworlds — a fitting aesthetic for a track that lingers, as Sevänen puts it, “in the liminal spaces of sleep, shadow, and night.”
