Widespread Panic Returns to Milwaukee’s Riverside Theater for Three Nights, October 23–25
Mark your calendars, Spreadheads — Widespread Panic is once again making the pilgrimage to Milwaukee for its annual three-night stand at the Riverside Theater. The Athens, GA jam institution will take over 116 W. Wisconsin Avenue on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, October 23–25, with doors at 6:30 PM and shows kicking off at 8:00 PM sharp.
If you’ve been around the block a time or two, you already know what a Panic run in Milwaukee looks like: no two setlists alike, deep cuts pulled from a catalog that spans 12 studio albums and a jaw-dropping 43 live records, and a room full of devoted fans who plan their entire October around these dates. That’s the beauty of a Panic weekend — you don’t just buy a ticket, you buy into a tradition.
Formed in 1986 by vocalist/guitarist John “JB” Bell, bassist Dave Schools, and the late guitarist Michael Houser, the band’s lineup solidified with percussionist Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz, keyboardist John “JoJo” Hermann, the late drummer Todd Nance, and current drummer Duane Trucks. Nearly four decades in, they remain one of the most successful touring acts on the planet — with more than 3 million records sold, a staggering 75 sold-out shows at Red Rocks, 18 sellouts at Atlanta’s Philips Arena (they’ve got a banner in the rafters to prove it), and eight headlining slots at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, where they once drew a single-day record crowd of 63,000.
They’ve headlined Bonnaroo eight times. They’ve topped bills at Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Lockn’, Outside Lands, Forecastle, and just about every other festival worth naming. In 2011, the Georgia Senate and House of Representatives passed resolutions honoring the band’s 25th anniversary, and they were inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame the same year. Not bad for a group of college kids who used to jam in a suburban Athens house near the UGA campus.
