A decade after he strolled into the honky-tonk and quietly told bro-country to hold his beer, Jon Pardi is dusting off the record that started it all. CALIFORNIA SUNRISE (10th ANNIVERSARY EDITION) is out now via MCA, expanding the 3x-Platinum, chart-topping 2016 album with three previously unreleased songs pulled straight from the vault.

Originally produced by Bart Butler and Pardi, the anniversary edition brings Ryan Gore into the fold for the three new additions: the sunshine-soaked singalong “Drinkin’ and Dancin’,” the devoted country rocker “If I Had Another Heart,” and the swaying flirtation of “How Did You Know.” As Country Central put it, the tracks have “iconic album sounds like it easily could’ve originally been included” — and they do. These aren’t leftovers; they’re the missing puzzle pieces that make the picture even fuller.

The timing couldn’t be sweeter. On Monday, CALIFORNIA SUNRISE will notch its 500th week inside the Top 50 of Billboard’s Top Country Albums Chart, making it just the second album in active rotation to cross that milestone — trailing only Chris Stapleton’s Traveller. Add to that the news that “Dirt On My Boots” has officially been certified 7x-Platinum by the RIAA, joining fellow 7x-Platinum smash “Head Over Boots” in the record’s already stacked trophy case, and the case for California Sunrise as a modern country cornerstone writes itself.

When the album first dropped in 2016, it landed like a boot to the chest of a scene drowning in tailgate clichés. People magazine credited it with bringing “authenticity back into Country music,” and Pardi’s blend of playful romance, hard twang, and lived-in swagger helped kick off the neo-traditional movement that’s since gone fully mainstream. Five Platinum-or-better singles later, the record is still doing the work — proof, as Variety noted, that “the kind of country music multiple generations came to know, and love can still work on a mass scale.”
