AUDIO: The Smudge – “Strong Letter to Follow”
Milwaukee’s ever-restless experimental outfit The Smudge is back with a new full-length, “Strong Letter to Follow,” and it’s exactly the kind of release that rewards the kind of listener who reads the liner notes twice and still walks away with more questions than answers. That’s a compliment, by the way.
True to form, The Smudge treats genre like a suggestion rather than a rule. “Strong Letter to Follow” moves between skronky guitar experiments, off-kilter rhythms, and passages that feel less like songs and more like transmissions from a basement somewhere on the east side. There’s a dry wit running through the whole record, the sonic equivalent of a raised eyebrow, and it keeps things from ever feeling too precious about themselves.
What makes this release land is the balance. For every moment of pure noise-nerd indulgence, there’s a hook or a melodic turn that pulls you back in and reminds you these are songs, not just experiments. It’s the sort of album that will click immediately for fans of Milwaukee’s weirder corners while still offering plenty of entry points for the curious.
