Milwaukee’s From Lawson strips things all the way down on his latest release, “Persistence,” a raw, acoustic-leaning effort that trades distortion pedals and stacked amps for something quieter but no less confrontational. In a scene that often measures worth by volume, From Lawson makes a compelling case for the opposite: sit down, shut up, and listen.

“Persistence” lives up to its name. These songs feel worked over, sanded down, and reassembled by someone who wasn’t in a rush to call it finished. The acoustic arrangements let the songwriting do the heavy lifting, and the songwriting more than earns the spotlight. There’s a lived-in warmth to the recordings, the kind that suggests late nights, second-guessing, and eventually — persistence. Go figure.

Fans of Milwaukee’s long tradition of songwriters who can carry a room with just six strings and a decent story will find plenty to love here. It’s the sort of record that rewards headphones and a little patience — which, to be fair, is more than most streaming algorithms are asking of anybody these days.
