Keith Urban Sets Sail on New Yacht Rock Album FLOW STATE — Out Now

Somewhere between the last sip of a piña colada and the first sunburn of the season, Keith Urban decided it was time to trade in the honky-tonk for the harbor. The global Country superstar has officially released his 13th studio album, FLOW STATE (via MCA), and it is exactly what the title promises — an 11-track exhale that leans headlong into the breezy, sun-bleached world of yacht rock.

Produced by Urban alongside longtime collaborator Dann Huff and tracked at Urban’s Nashville studio, “The Sound,” FLOW STATE gathers ten classic yacht rock covers plus one gleaming original — “We Go Back,” featuring the genre’s patron saint himself, Michael McDonald. Urban’s signature guitar tone slides comfortably into these grooves, giving standards like “Baby Come Back,” “Just the Two of Us,” “On and On,” and “Summer Breeze” a warm, unhurried polish.

“Creating FLOW STATE was one of the most unexpected albums I’ve ever made,” Urban shared. “In a lot of ways, it felt like the whole album had an energy and life of its own and I was just following where it lead me… There’s a reason these songs have stood the test of time, and equally so, the need for their spirit of fully disconnecting from ‘the grid’ and swimming in blue sky simplicity.”

The guest list plays like a dream lineup for a summer cruise. Little Big Town joins him on a rich, harmony-drenched take of “Magnet and Steel,” John Mayer adds his unmistakable phrasing to “Guitar Man,” and McDonald’s smoky vocal turn on “We Go Back” ties the whole record to yacht rock’s original bloodline.
