If you’ve ever wondered what happens when a Celtic punk accordion virtuoso and a desert punk howler decide to fall madly in love with vintage Jamaican ska and reggae — well, wonder no more. Southern California’s A-100s have arrived, and they’re serving up something genuinely special with their new single and video, “Rude and Lovely.”

The band is the brainchild of Matt Hensley (accordionist of Flogging Molly) and Sean Wheeler (vocalist of Throw Rag), a songwriting duo whose collaboration has been nearly a decade in the making since Hensley first floated the idea back in 2017. The concept: vintage ska and reggae with a Conjunto accordion twist. The result: absolutely infectious.

The title itself has a great origin story. Wheeler was rolling through Mexico City when he spotted a hand-painted rotulo on a beauty salon storefront that read “Rude and Lovely.” He couldn’t shake it. “That’s it! The perfect statement for what we had been doing musically,” he told Hensley in an excited phone call. Anyone who hears the track will agree — it’s a phrase that fits the sound like a two-tone glove.

“Rude and Lovely” is the title track from the band’s forthcoming debut LP, dropping July 10, 2026 via Pirates Press Records. It follows their first single, “Too Rad To Be Sad,” a tune Wheeler describes as a message of hope and resilience — a reminder to “stay in the light” and let the people around you know they’re loved, appreciated, and necessary for the bright future ahead. Not exactly your average party ska sentiment, but that emotional depth is part of what makes this project hit different.

And speaking of pedigree — this thing is stacked. Beyond the core Hensley/Wheeler duo, A-100s pull in collaborators from Mariachi El Bronx, Mad Caddies, Smoke & Mirrors Sound System, and members of the early ’90s ska outfit Spy Kids (which Hensley himself played guitar and keys in). Add in folks who’ve shared stages with Jimmy Cliff, Symarip, Roddy Radiation, and even Tom Petty, and you’re looking at a lineup that reads like an underground music hall of fame roll call. To top it off, the album was co-produced by Roger Rivas of The Aggrolites. This is, in every possible sense, the real deal.

The exclusive premiere of the “Rude and Lovely” video landed via the Supernova International Ska Festival website, coinciding with the announcement that A-100s have officially been added to this year’s lineup. The festival goes down in Hampton, VA this September, and A-100s will share the bill with fellow Pirates Press label mates The Slackers and The Aggrolites.
