Twenty years on, the punk cabaret is back in session — and this time, the Dresden Dolls own the masters.

Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione have just shared “My Alcoholic Friends (Tailor’s Version),” the latest teaser from their newly re-recorded take on their landmark 2006 sophomore LP. Fittingly titled Yes, Virginia…(Tailor’s Version) — a cheeky tip of the bowler hat to Taylor Swift’s own masters reclamation crusade — the album lands digitally, on CD, and on vinyl on Friday, August 7.

The re-recording follows the recent expiration of the duo’s 20-year contract with Roadrunner Records, freeing Palmer and Viglione to revisit the songs on their own terms. And “My Alcoholic Friends” is no small piece of that catalog: the original clocks in at more than 240 million global streams and 70 million YouTube views, and recently earned the Dolls their first-ever RIAA Platinum certification — two decades after it first slid out into the world.

“The Dolls have been smashing out ‘My Alcoholic Friends’ on live stages for over two decades now, so re-recording it a few months ago was less of a scary challenge and more of a fun circus ride,” Palmer says. “It’s so inside of our blood that the song almost plays itself at this point.” She adds that the track “was supposed to hit the listener like a sonic car crash,” and admits she’s been delighted watching a new generation of TikTok listeners paste their own meanings onto the lyrics.

Tracked almost entirely live in late 2025 at Boston’s Mad Oak Studios with longtime collaborator Benny Grotto and mixed by Paul Kolderie (co-founder of the iconic Fort Apache Studios and engineer on the original 2006 sessions), the new album keeps the tracklist intact — save for a physical-only bonus cut — while giving fan favorites like “Sex Changes,” “Mrs. O,” “Sing,” “Delilah,” “Me and the Minibar,” and “Backstabber” room to breathe. Guest appearances from French-knighted jazz vocalist Veronica Swift and two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon add extra sparkle, while South African surrealist Niki McQueen provides brand-new front and back cover artwork.

“It feels like we’re both far more sophisticated and nuanced musicians now,” Palmer reflects. “We have more grace as collaborators; we leave more sonic space for one another… now we can get out of the way of the songs themselves and let them breathe more deeply.” Still, don’t expect polish for polish’s sake — some tracks were captured in a single take, vocals and all. “The recording didn’t need to be perfect, quite the contrary: it had to feel alive and urgent.”

Palmer also notes just how eerily current the material feels in 2026, from themes of powerlessness and the creeping tide of fascism to abortion rights and — in “Modern Moonlight” — the corporate takeover of outer space. “It’s like, wow, look how far we haven’t come.”

To celebrate, the Dresden Dolls kick off a sprawling international headline tour on September 1 at Vienna’s Arena Wien Open Air, winding through Europe and the UK before hitting North America in October. The run wraps with a two-night homecoming at Boston’s Colonial Theatre on December 4-5 and a grand finale at Brooklyn Paramount on December 9.
