Milwaukee songwriter Dan Kwas is back with a new full-length that trades polish for personality, and the city is better for it. “Drawing on the Sidewalks” is the latest offering from Kwas, a name long tied to the Cream City’s underground rock lineage and the storied Milwaukee outfit The Sidewalks. If the title feels like a knowing wink, that’s because it is — this is a record made by someone who’s been leaving chalk marks on this scene for decades and still isn’t ready to hose them off.
Stylistically, “Drawing on the Sidewalks” sits comfortably in that scrappy, guitar-forward rock pocket Milwaukee does so well — a little jangle, a little bite, and lyrics that read like overheard conversations at a Riverwest bar just before last call. Kwas has a knack for melodies that sound familiar on the first spin and lived-in by the third, the kind of songs that feel like they’ve always existed and were just waiting around for someone to write them down.
