David Nail Breaks a Decade of Silence: New Album ‘Flowers’ Blooms August 21

Ten years is a long time to wait for anything — a good sequel, a decent haircut, or in this case, a proper full-length record from one of Country music’s most quietly devastating vocalists. David Nail is finally ending the wait. The Kennett, Missouri-born singer-songwriter has announced Flowers, his first album in a decade, arriving August 21.

For an artist who has spent the last ten years releasing EPs, one-off singles, and doing the honest work of an independent musician after departing MCA in 2017, Flowers is less a comeback and more a culmination. Nail didn’t sit down intending to make an album at all. He sat down to write a song. Then another. Then, before he could talk himself out of it, he had fourteen of them.

“I think what makes this album special is that I never intended to make one,” Nail said. “It started with a song, which then became 3, then 5, and eventually 12, 14. These are 10 of those songs, written over the course of a year and a half. I never once went in thinking about anything other than writing the best song possible, something I’d be excited to play my wife when I got back home.”

The record’s origin story traces back to a 2023 writing session with Anderson East, which produced “The Crown” and cracked open the door for “Break Yours Too.” From there, the collaborator list reads like a Nashville dream team: multi-GRAMMY, CMA, and ACM winner Lori McKenna, along with songwriting heavyweights Trent Dabbs and Melissa Fuller. The band is stacked too — pianist Philip Towns, percussionist Darren Dodd, bassist Gregg Garner, and guitarists Shaun Richardson and Weston Stewart.

Nail credits East’s studio and laid-back demeanor with unlocking a different creative gear. “Anderson’s studio is not only the most inspiring place I’ve ever been creative in, but his laid-back personality was the perfect contrast to my chaotic, anxious, always-in-a-rush way that I’d been known for throughout my career.”

The announcement came from the most storied stage in Country music. Nail revealed Flowers at the Grand Ole Opry, where MCA EVP/Head of A&R Stephanie Wright emerged from the wings to blindside him with five new RIAA certifications: “Whatever She’s Got” is now triple Platinum; “Nights on Fire,” “Red Light,” and “Let It Rain” are all Certified Platinum; and “Kiss You Tonight” is now Gold. Not a bad Tuesday night.

“The Crown” and “Fare Thee Well” have already served as the appetizers. This Friday, Nail dishes up “She Knows” as the first proper course from Flowers. Fans can stream David Nail’s catalog and pre-save the new music on Spotify here: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2eZejw1srB0eNP7ci4E5Tj

Nail just wrapped the Spring leg of his Down To The Studs acoustic tour — stripped-down shows built around a guitar, the stories behind the songs, and that unmistakable voice. If the tour was the appetizer plate, Flowers is the main course fans have been patiently waiting a decade to taste.

Flowers arrives August 21. Pre-order now and mark the calendar — this is the kind of record that reminds you why you fell for David Nail in the first place.
