Portuguese Dark Metal pioneers Moonspell have never been shy about staring into the abyss — and with their new single “Cross Your Heart,” they invite the abyss to stare right back. Released today alongside a stunning official music video, the track is the opening salvo from the band’s forthcoming 14th studio album, Far From God, out July 3 via Napalm Records.

If the previously unveiled title track “Far From God” plunged listeners into tragic vampiric romance and the spiritual decay of modern Gothic Metal, “Cross Your Heart” takes a different but equally haunted route — literally. The song meditates on the endless roads that both connect and separate us, and the roadside shrines that mark the places where lives ended too soon. It’s Moonspell doing what Moonspell does best: turning grief into grandeur.

Musically, “Cross Your Heart” feels like a spiritual sibling to the band’s beloved Irreligious era, but with a sharper, more modern edge. Brooding melodies, grounded riffing, and Fernando Ribeiro’s unmistakable baritone converge into a dark, melancholic anthem about mortality, memory, and the fragile nature of a life spent in motion.

“Reminiscent of Irreligious with a modern and dark twist, this gothic metal song tells us about the shrines that we can frequently find on the roads of all countries in the world and that are erected as a painful memory to those who departed in car and bike crashes, often too soon, every time too painfully,” Ribeiro explains. “Like a band who made miles upon miles and a few crashes themselves, we are privileged observers of the daily and nightly life on the roads, the promised cities, the bitter disappointments, the anguish of a portable life. Before such powers we can only cross our heart and hope to live enough before our time does come.”

Born out of five years of creative searching, doubt, and ultimate rediscovery, Far From God marks a bold return for the band. Produced by Jaime Gomez Arellano (Paradise Lost, Sólstafir, Ghost), the album is described by the band as their “21st century Irreligious” — a black diamond of Gothic Metal, luminous yet shadowed, romantic yet unapologetically heavy. Thematically it weaves through Baudelairian love, existential guilt, Christlike resurrections, and the quiet nobility of creatures of the night. Vampires and werewolves aren’t escapism here; they’re vehicles for genuine dark emotion.

Far From God arrives July 3 via Napalm Records, with artwork painted by Eliran Kantor. The album will be available in a dizzying array of formats, from standard CD and digital to gatefold vinyl variants, a shirt bundle, and a wooden boxset complete with cross pendant and hand-numbered certificate of authenticity.
