lucky break Channels Liz Phair and Elliott Smith in Dreamy “Pictures of Herself” Video — Debut LP ‘made it!’ Out Now via Fire Records

If you’ve been searching for the spiritual heir to the bedroom-pop-meets-90s-alt-rock universe, lucky break just handed you a portal — and it’s painted entirely pink.

The San Francisco via New York City indie rock artist has shared the official music video for “Pictures of Herself,” the latest cut from her debut album made it!, out now via Fire Records. Directed by frequent collaborator and close friend Margaret Elle, the clip cuts between an all-pink bedroom and pastoral farmland, continuing the loose narrative thread that ties her album’s visuals together.

“Originally, I had an idea where all of the music videos, when played in order, told some kind of story,” lucky break explains. “In my mind, this pink room is where lucky break wakes up after she crawls through the tunnel in ‘Crush.'”

The video wears its influences proudly. lucky break and Elle pulled directly from the worlds of Liz Phair and Elliott Smith — specifically nodding to Smith’s “Rose Parade” in a scene where lucky break plays guitar with two girls (her little sister and Elle’s childhood best friend, naturally) standing behind her. It’s the kind of detail that rewards the obsessives without alienating anyone just here for the hooks.

made it! is the product of a very specific kind of early-twenties freefall. lucky break started writing the record after falling in love for the first time, moving abroad to teach English, getting ghosted, getting sick, and ending up confined to her bedroom — where eleven songs poured out. “‘made it!’ captures my life from 19 to 23 as I was going through major transitions, finding my inner compass and figuring out how to live in alignment with my values,” she says.

The album was produced alongside friend and co-producer Elliott Woodbridge, recorded in a Burbank studio next to the train tracks, and mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Jessica Thompson (Margo Guryan, X-Cetra, Erroll Garner). Sonically, lucky break pulls from a deep well: Pavement, Fiona Apple, Lucinda Williams, John Prine, and Joni Mitchell all leave fingerprints, blended with the pop and country she grew up on. Hole’s Melissa Auf der Maur has been an early champion, which tells you exactly the lineage we’re working with here.

For the uninitiated: lucky break is less a stage name than a hand-drawn cartoon character living inside a zine, a portal, another dimension. She illustrates her own album art, tour posters, zines, and sticker packs — building a whimsical, self-contained world that feels equal parts Daniel Johnston scrapbook and Liz Phair diary entry.

lucky break is on the road across the U.S. this summer, with a Los Angeles show tonight at Permanent Records and a run of July dates supporting Nashville’s Maisy Owen.
