The Kody Norris Show Reimagines Phil Ochs Classic on New Single “The Power and Glory”

The Kody Norris Show has done something that takes more than rhinestones and a sharp suit to pull off: they’ve taken a Phil Ochs folk classic from the mid-1960s and reimagined it as a sweeping, reverent piece of modern bluegrass. Their new single, “The Power and Glory,” is out now on Rebel Records and serves as the latest preview of their forthcoming album, Spirit of America, arriving Friday, June 26.

Originally penned by Ochs as a folk anthem about the beauty and responsibility of the American landscape, “The Power and Glory” gets a fresh treatment here. Mary Rachel Nalley-Norris takes the lead vocal before sliding into harmony on the chorus, while Kody Norris arranges the song for the full band — a move that lets the lyric’s sweeping imagery of meadows, mountains, valleys, and rivers breathe in a way that feels both classic and new.

“When the idea of an America250 celebration album came about, we had a pretty good idea what most of the material would be,” shares Mary Rachel Nalley-Norris. “However, we still wanted to look at outside songs that may have slipped by us throughout the years. This was one of those as it dates back to the mid-sixties by Phil Ochs! When we sat down to rehearse for this album, I envisioned this song in a little different format with me singing lead and then hopping to the harmony line on the chorus. Kody put the arrangement to it and bam – we had us another song for the album!”

The track was recorded by Wes Easter at Eastwood Studios in Cana, Virginia, and mixed and mastered by Van Atkins at The Shop Studio in Candler, North Carolina. The full lineup features Kody Norris on guitar and lead vocals, Mary Rachel Nalley-Norris on mandolin and vocals, Charlie Lowman on bass, Hayden “Jim” Hensley on banjo and harmony vocals, Gregg Lohman on percussion, and Jason Barie on fiddle.

“The Power and Glory” follows recent single “Good Ol’ USA,” whose music video premiered on RFD-TV and was featured by Taste of Country. Where that song leaned into pride and joy, this one brings a more reflective dimension — a reminder that America’s strength is measured by freedom, love of the land, and the way its people stand together. It’s a fitting offering as the country approaches its 250th anniversary, and Spirit of America positions itself as both a tribute and a rallying cry.

The Kody Norris Show isn’t slowing down, either. The band has kicked off their 2026 Spirit of America tour, with more than 60 shows across 20 states, including Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Minnesota, Missouri, and Texas. Bluegrass fans should also note their first-ever appearance at Colorado’s RockyGrass festival on July 26, where they’ll share the bill with Punch Brothers, The Del McCoury Band, Tim O’Brien, and Steep Canyon Rangers.

Stream “The Power and Glory” now, pre-order Spirit of America, and catch the band on the road this summer.
