Pagan metal stalwarts VARG are tightening the ring around their wolf pack one more time before unleashing their first-ever live album, Live at Wolfszeit Festival 2024, out tomorrow, May 22, via Napalm Records. As a final howl into the wilderness before release day, the German quintet has shared an official live video for “Ewige Wacht” — a goosebump-inducing rendition of the title track from their 2023 studio album, which became their highest-charting record to date, breaking the top 15 of the Official German Album Charts.

The live recording captures everything that has cemented VARG’s reign over the German pagan metal scene — fire, thunderous choirs, soaring melodies, and a crowd that sings every single lyric back at the band like a sworn oath. As VARG put it: “‘Ewige Wacht’ is a special moment for us every time we play it live. When the crowd sings back every lyric, we feel very clearly why this song has become the centerpiece of the album.”

Recorded at the band’s own Wolfszeit Festival and filmed with 13 cameras for a fully immersive Blu-ray experience, Live at Wolfszeit Festival 2024 sweeps through 16 tracks spanning VARG’s entire discography. The setlist pulls from the 2008 split EP Schildfront (“Aufzug der Heere,” “Schildfront”), digs into 2010’s Blutaar, rallies the pack with Wolfskult cuts like “Schwertzeit,” “Jagd,” and “Wir sind die Wölfe,” and crests with the towering material from Ewige Wacht, including a rare live appearance of “Fylgja” and a particularly stunning take on “Morgenrot,” where Freki’s growls and Fylgja’s clean vocals lock together beautifully.

Frontman Freki also directed the visual production, drenching the stage in fiery light installations and deep red atmospherics that turn the entire performance into a full-blown ritual. It’s a band at the peak of its creative powers, captured in a hometown setting that doubles as a spiritual gathering of the faithful.
