AUDIO: Junipour – “Junipour Hill”
Wisconsin has a long, weird, and wonderful tradition of bands that sound like they’ve spent a little too much time in the woods — and Junipour, the Verona-based psych-rock trio, are happily extending that tradition with their latest release, “Junipour Hill.”
Comprised of Ian Theissen (guitar, also known around the scene as Bright Orange), Avery Durnen (bass), and Jared Voss (drums, a.k.a. Jarey), Junipour have been quietly stacking up a reputation as one of the more interesting acts coming out of south-central Wisconsin. “Junipour Hill” is the kind of record that rewards a full listen — sun-dappled guitar tones, a rhythm section that knows when to lock in and when to wander, and the loose, lived-in feel of a band that actually likes each other.
It’s rock music, sure, but with enough hazy, psychedelic curl around the edges to keep things from ever feeling predictable. Fans of fuzzy Midwest indie and the kind of guitar bands that still believe in the power of a really good outro will find a lot to love here.
Stream “Junipour Hill” in full below, then do the right thing and toss the band a few bucks on Bandcamp. Wisconsin’s underground runs on coffee, cheap beer, and direct artist support — and these are exactly the kinds of records worth chipping in for.
