Ken Pomeroy Announces New EP ‘Tonight’s News,’ Shares Haunting Cover of “Look at Miss Ohio”

Ken Pomeroy isn’t slowing down — and frankly, why would she? The 22-year-old Oklahoma-born songwriter, who spent the last year quietly becoming one of Americana’s most talked-about new voices, has just announced a new EP titled Tonight’s News, due later this year via Rounder Records. To mark the occasion, she’s shared the lead single today: a hushed, gorgeously restrained cover of Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings’ modern classic “Look at Miss Ohio.”

If you’ve been paying attention to Pomeroy’s trajectory — the Twisters soundtrack appearance, the “Cicadas” sync on Reservation Dogs, the tours alongside Lukas Nelson and Iron & Wine — you already know she has a knack for making old-soul songs feel like they were written for her voice. Her take on “Miss Ohio” leans all the way into that. It’s intimate, live-in-the-room, and emotionally precise in the way only a great song interpreter can pull off.

A Covers EP With a Story
Tonight’s News was recorded in a single day in Chicago with producer Tom Schick, with Pomeroy’s musical partner Dakota McDaniel producing alongside her touring band — Ramsey Thornton, Coleton Holleyman, and Michael Rose. Everything was tracked live, no overdubs, all of them “sitting in a weird circle,” as Pomeroy puts it. That looseness is the whole point.

The six-track collection pulls from songs that shaped her as an artist, hand-picked by Pomeroy herself. The tracklist:

1. Look at Miss Ohio (Welch/Rawlings)
2. Deportee (Guthrie)
3. This Old Guitar (Denver)
4. Bound to Rain
5. Late for the Sky (Browne)
6. Sentimental Lady (Welch)

The lone original, “Bound to Rain,” is the song that gave the EP its name — and it’s the same track featured in the FX series The Lowdown. It’s also making its vinyl debut here, which is a nice bone to throw the collectors.

Cruel Joke Turns One
The Tonight’s News announcement also lands on the one-year anniversary of Pomeroy’s breakout project Cruel Joke. To celebrate, she’s rolling out an exclusive anniversary vinyl colorway plus limited merch through her online store. Worth a look if you’re the kind of fan who wants the wax before it disappears.

The Takeaway
Tonight’s News is shaping up to be the kind of project that tells you exactly who an artist is by showing you who they listen to. Pomeroy picking Gillian Welch, Woody Guthrie, John Denver, and Jackson Browne — and then sliding her own “Bound to Rain” into that company — is the move of someone who knows exactly where she fits in the Americana lineage.
