The Runarounds Bottle Up Reckless Youth in New “Bleachers” Music Video

There’s a specific kind of magic in turning your headlights off before pulling into a friend’s driveway at 1 a.m. The Runarounds remember it. And on their new single “Bleachers,” they’ve packaged that feeling into three and a half minutes of shimmering indie rock that hits like a half-forgotten high school memory.

The fast-rising five-piece just dropped the official music video for “Bleachers,” and it’s the kind of release that doubles as a love letter — to their fans, their hometown scene, and the version of themselves who still believed curfews were a real obstacle.

A HOMECOMING ON SCREEN

Filmed in part at The Commodore in Charleston, SC, the video features actual Runarounds fans packing the crowd during the performance scenes — no extras, no rented enthusiasm, just the real thing. Director Brad Walker, who previously served as Director of Photography on the band’s Amazon Prime series, knows exactly how to frame this band at full volume, and it shows.

“We had such a blast filming our latest music video,” drummer Zendé Murdock said. “Thanks to our incredible team, we were able to find little pockets of time over a couple days on tour to film this awesome video… Also shoutout to our ever so sweet Charleston peeps who joined us for the performance scenes, we love ya so much.”

THE SONG ITSELF

Produced by Daniel Gleason (Grouplove) and TJ Elias (Mastodon, Manchester Orchestra) at 100 Watt Studios in Charleston, “Bleachers” is built on anthemic melodies, ringing guitars, and the kind of urgency that’s quickly become the band’s calling card. The track lives in that bittersweet space between knowing a moment won’t last and choosing to live in it anyway.

Guitarist and vocalist Axel Ellis explained the song’s origin: “Bleachers was written initially about sneaking out when you were younger. While we’re all a bit too old to have to ‘sneak out’ these days — we wrote it as if we were still doing things we used to do in high school. Things like turning your headlights off before picking up a friend so their parents don’t see, or silently shuffling down the driveway so as to not make a sound — things that used to make our hearts race back when curfews mattered. It led us down a road of wanting to take back that fleeting nostalgia — the nights in the backseat, or under the bleachers. It’s a reconnection with youth, recognizing although you might not be in that same place anymore, why not try to keep the good days alive?”

A BREAKOUT YEAR ROLLS ON

“Bleachers” arrives as the band gears up for the next leg of their Minivan Tour, following a headline run that moved more than 45,000 tickets across 32 shows, forced 12 venue upgrades, and added second nights in both New York City and Nashville. They kick things off June 6 in Little Rock, hit Bonnaroo on June 13 for a high-profile festival debut, and roll through the South with already sold-out stops in Orlando and Greensboro.

What started as a weekly beach-bar residency in Wilmington, North Carolina has become a coast-to-coast operation. The Amazon Prime show that originally introduced these five musicians to the world may not be continuing, but the band is — with a debut studio album reportedly in the works.
