John PayCheck & Struggle Jennings Reignite the Outlaw Spirit on New Single “Sons Of The Spark”

Some collaborations feel manufactured by algorithm. Others feel like they were always written in the stars — or in this case, in the bloodlines. “Sons Of The Spark,” the brand-new single from John PayCheck and Struggle Jennings, lands squarely in the latter category. Out May 15 via HorseBite Entertainment, it’s a steel-soaked, rebellion-fueled anthem from two artists who carry country royalty in their DNA but refuse to be boxed in by it.

PayCheck — son of the late Grand Ole Opry legend Johnny PayCheck — and Jennings, the grandson of Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, met at a party, swapped war stories, and quickly realized they had more in common than a famous last name. “Growing up wasn’t easy for us, we both had our own demons to deal with, and we learned some hard family lessons,” PayCheck said of the spark that lit the song.

Co-written by PayCheck, Struggle Jennings, and longtime collaborator Scott Gabbey, “Sons Of The Spark” was tracked at Gnome Studios with producer Bill McDermott, whose résumé reads like a country Hall of Fame ballot (George Strait, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley). The result is a track built on steel guitar grit, raw vocal delivery, and the kind of unflinching lyrical posture that defined outlaw country in the first place. Lines like “We don’t back up, we don’t bow down / When they close that gate, we bust it right down” aren’t poetry workshop material — they’re a mission statement.

What makes “Sons Of The Spark” hit harder than the average legacy duet is its refusal to lean on nostalgia. PayCheck and Jennings aren’t cosplaying their forefathers; they’re picking up the torch and pointing it at a music industry that still wants to tell them who to be. “No other family business treats the sons and daughters the same way,” PayCheck noted. “Struggle and I face similar obstacles that we won’t let hold us back. This song is about that.”
