10 Years Later: December 2015

Every month, we’re going to look back at the Milwaukee releases that are celebrating a milestone anniversary. We dug into our archives, and here are the 10-year old releases that are still available for streaming today:

Tapebenders – “Set Your Life On Fire”

What we said in 2015: “Tapebenders are quickly becoming one of the more recognizable names on the Milwaukee scene, and their most recent release, “Set Your Life On Fire”, is a solid demonstration of why the band is emerging. With an eclectic sound that best falls under the indie rock category, although at times drifts elsewhere, there is a lot of talent to be recognized from this band.”

Bad Wig – “Bad Wig”

What we said in 2015: “Bad Wig have introduced themselves as a lo-fi, high intensity group, and you really get the feel for the band’s style on their debut EP. The band formerly known as the Midwestern Charm carries on the influence of a former sound that feels uniquely, well, Midwestern. The mix of bright, poppy lyrics and fuzzy production make this feel homegrown, but it almost has to feel that way. If this guitars and vocals on this EP sounded a little cleaner, it wouldn’t have the same appeal. In a way, this material is almost too good to sound great, if that makes any sense. Bad Wig keep their edge through the analog sounding buzz, and still managed to pull off a well written indie album.”

Pizzle – “Bad As It Seems”

What we said in 2015: “With the production “Grand Design” almost hitting the two year mark, Pizzle recently released “Bad As It Seems”, a track that doesn’t carry any information to it, so we can assume it’s a loose track that wasn’t intended for the final product. Armed with a hard beat from Yung Dev, Pizzle switches it up from his normal machine gun, double time flow to kick back. There are bright spots, though, including a less than subtle jab at Bryson Tiller, stemming from an alleged beat-jacking incident.”

Pharoah Khalid – “Money To The People”

What we said in 2015: “Today we have a brand new album from Milwaukee’s Pharoh Khalid, entitled “Money To The People”. The young emcee brings a collection of new tracks to the table, and is destined to further etch his name into the Milwaukee hip hop scene. “Money To The People” drops after several head-nod worthy freestyles and loose tracks have populated Khalid’s SoundCloud. This tape is an expansion upon those tracks, with a somewhat more unified sound. It is also the first release from Open Range Living, Khalid’s relatively young company.”
