10 Years Later: May 2015
Every month, we’re going to look back at the Milwaukee releases that are celebrating a milestone anniversary. We dug into our archives, and here are the 10-year old releases that are still available for streaming today:
Mashio – “Free Crack”:
What we said in 2015: “Milwaukee emcee Mashio is probably best known for his work with producer/emcee Dahm, but the duo have set out to release their own separate projects as well, as an addition to the group’s sound. The first of Mashio’s releases from his upcoming solo project, “Complicated Melodies” is “Free Crack”, which is produced by Dahm. According to Mashio, the project’s name comes from “The complications of the everyday Afro male life. The melodies are songs from the free spirit that no one can take away.””
Dana Coppafeel, SPEAKEasy, and Vincent Van Great – “Cake (Remix)”:
What we said in 2015: “With Uni-Fi Records “VII Days” project, we’re confirming what we already know: Dana Coppafeel and SPEAK Easy have verses for days, and the Uni-Fi crew is very talented as a whole. “Cake (remix) is no exception. With the feature from Vincent VanGREAT contributing to the mix, you’re in for a treat. According to the label, this track was actually deconstructed after it was originally recorded, and remade from scratch after the artists weren’t really feeling it.”
Klassik – “Hi Klass”
What we said in 2015: “Klassik is speeding through his season-themed mixtapes, in anticipation of his “Seasons” LP to culminate the previous four releases. With one single already released, “Hi Klass” is the second track to be declared a single from “Seasons”, and may appear on the upcoming “Autumn” EP as well. The track combines Klassik’s signature smooth, piano/orchestral production with the rigidness of contemporary hip hop/trap drums, vocal effects, and, wait for it, tenor saxophone. If you didn’t know by now, Klassik is a multi-instrumentalist, to say the least.”
Estates – “It’s Great to Be Alone”
What we said in 2015: “Raw, in your face, and catchy as hell. Mike, Charlie, and Matt provide wonderful aggressive and mellow vocals while killing it at each of their instruments. 2016 should hold bigger and better things for Milwaukee’s own Estates. I highly recommend giving this one a listen. I think you’ll be hooked by the first track. Both loud and quiet, this album will make you great to be alone.”
Midnight Reruns – “Get Me Out”
What we said in 2015: “Releases like the “Get Me Out” EP are nothing new to Midnight Reruns. On both of their previous projects, they’ve honed in their sound with a sound all their own. People are taking notice, as well. The band is starting to play bigger venues, including recently opening for The Replacements, and an upcoming trip to Florida for The Fest. Make sure you get a chance to check them out in a smaller venue while you still can, as it’s looking like they may not be playing small venues for much longer.”
Mike Regal – “Keep Smoking”
What we said in 2015: “Mike Regal may be a new name to you, but he’s definitely not new to the music scene at all. He’s already won the Miltown Beatdown, and had a string of production credits, including tracks from Reggie Bonds and AR Wesley, amongst others. Now he’s embarking on his own, led by the super glitchy visuals for debut track “Keep Smoking”. With projects in the works, something tells me Regal will be an even more familiar name by the end of this summer.”
WebsterX – “Lately”
What we said in 2015: “Milwaukee’s WebsterX is currently gaining a lot of traction both inside and outside of the city. His “Doomsday” video blew some doors open, and in reflection of that, he released “Lately”. The introspective track comes of as slightly melancholy, but the track still has a bit of bounce to it, as well. It’s great to see an artist be as honest on a track as WebsterX is here. This feels genuine, and that’s not something you can say a lot about hip hop in general.”
