10 Years Later: February 2015
Every month, we’re going to look back at the Milwaukee releases that are celebrating a milestone anniversary. We dug into our archives, and here are the 10-year old releases that are still available for streaming today:
Blonder – “Yellow”:
What we said in 2015: “There’s an aura of cool to it. Throughout the whole thing, Blonder manage to blend the grit of alternative in a previous era and the modern cool of today’s indie pop records. It’s very much like discovering a vinyl EP in a record crate, throwing it on, and being amazed by it. You just get the sense that music is fun listening to this band, and if that’s not the sign of doing something well, I don’t know what is.”
Eagle Trace – “Off In The Night”
What we said in 2015: “The EP is four hard hitting tracks, centered around the single “Ghost”. Recorded by Shane Hochstetler at Howl Street Recordings, this EP is another high quality project, with a big-yet-gritty sound reminiscent of bands like the Black Keys and Wolfmother. There’s also a touch of retro classic rock influence as well, which has become a main element of Eagle Trace’s sound. Long story short, this EP is well worth the listen.”
Dana Coppafeel & SPEAKEasy – “This Is Us (Remix)”
What we said in 2015: “Armed with a heavy trap beat, the duo spit their respective verses with their own unique flare, and some crazy visuals (edited by Dana Coppa) compliment the track well. The track is a remix to a song featuring Klassik, and the remix is featured on the Uni-Fi Records Volume One mixtape.”
The Living Statues – “Extra Day”
What we said in 2015: “Amongst the names of buzzing artists in Milwaukee are The Living Statues, a band that’s full of straight up rock and roll with an extra shot of energy. Their newest video is for “Extra Day” off of their “Knockin’” EP. With some vintage noir visuals, and the Statues putting everything they’ve got into this song, they make a strong case as to why they’re a band to watch not only on the local level, but beyond.”
Proph Featuring ElEl – “Bubbly”
What we said in 2015: “Milwaukee emcee Proph has made a lot of major moves in recent years. From rocking huge crowds on the Summerfest grounds to getting music placements on major television shows around the world, to moving to Nashville to focus on his career. Now, to add of that, he’s coming back with more original music, this time featuring Nashville band ELEL. The new track is “Bubbly”, a genre-crossing song that showcases the best of both worlds into an exciting hybrid. This is a major switch-up of Proph’s sound, and it will definitely be interesting to see if this carries over into the next project that he releases, slated for later this year. Personally, I think this is one of his best tracks to date.”
IshDARR – “Vibe”
What we said in 2015: “The onslaught of quality Milwaukee hip hop is in full effect in 2015. One of the latest to drop something of the highest quality is IshDARR, who recently put out “Vibe”. This track kind of has that smooth, 90’s feel to it, with a signature flow to go over it. This track is anticipation of “Old Soul, Young Spirit” which is due out in the near future.”
