Ace Poetik Zones on “Tears of a Melody”

By Deuce

The sense of space pervading about the track on “Tears of a Melody”, the latest single from microphone musician Ace Poetik, is palpable. It’s designed for drifting off, enveloping oneself in one’s thoughts, emotions, remembrances, close encounters, and the like.

That’s predominantly what Ace does, taking his time through a string of 16s to flash back to some of the more poignant episodes in the life of a young man in a world which is anything but simple. His rhymes are straight to the point, oftentimes ending and compiling atop each other at the conclusion of the bars, punctuated with a heady sense of emotion.

But back to the beat, which is produced by Lavish. There’s one super sensory kick and the rest of the drum pattern is mostly comprised of lonesome snares. In fact, there’s a curious dearth of percussion on this number, which simply helps to expand the sense of space and exploration which seems to have worked wonders on the mind and pen of Poetik.

From there the number is steeped in heavy duty chords, about three of them for each bar, rising in pitch as though compelling the listener, or the rapper, forward. They’re mostly synth-induced, although at times, there’s a good helping of piano in them.

The vibrancy characterizing the number is found in the vocals. It’s unclear if the background singer, who eschews words for some heartfelt “whoa, whoas”, actually dropped his vocals specifically for this track or if they’ve been sampled. It might’ve been both. Regardless, it gives the number a distinct rhythm and blues appeal, perhaps something like a slow jam, particularly before Ace blesses the mic at the tune’s outset.

Trip thing is, once some of the verses start, those same vocals become super high-pitched in that sped up sort of way that was initially popularized by Kanye West a couple decades ago. It ups the energy that Ace redoubles with his verbiage, yet certainly gives credence to the sample theory about the vocals.

It’ll be interesting to see what Ace comes up with next.
