On a cold rainy night in March, the half-soaked Cactus Club crowd clung to the walls and made quiet conversation before the show began. Suddenly, the band’s noodling and tuning on stage abruptly shifted into the first song of the night, filling the room with sound. The crowd simultaneously gravitated towards the effortlessly smooth voice of Steph Lippert, filling the floor as well. The room was quickly warmed by the music’s aura. Lippert was backed by a jazz/soul fusion group, with one member alternating between a flute and saxophone on any given song – yet the crowd was still not prepared for what was yet to come. The shift between sets was brisk, and the crowd that had wandered in from the bar was eager for the next performance. Landers stole the show and swooned many an audience member in the process. The Alabama natives rocked through timeless covers by the likes of Stevie Wonder, The Beatles and Al green to the delight of the varied age group in attendance. A spirited group of dancers occupied the small strip between the crowd and the stage as their personal runway, often partnering up in elaborate routines to the delight of all, even the band. All in all, the Milwaukee grove enthusiasts who braved mother nature’s early spring tears were treated to a warm and fulfilling night.
