‘Came A Long Way’ by Flip Huston Is Unfiltered, Raw And As Honest As It Can Be
After generating a healthy buzz with his mixtape Pieces to The Puzzle in 2010, Pacific Northwest artist Flip Huston released a series of singles and records that solidified his status as a rapper, including his most recent release Who Is Flip Huston? The eight-track project has bangers from top to bottom and Flip connecting on tracks with hip-hop heavyweights like Dame D.O.L.L.A (Damian Lillard of the Portland Trailblazers) and Jim Jones of Dipset. Flip Huston has returned to secure his reputation in 2021 with his upcoming new single ‘Came A Long Way’, one of his most gripping tracks to date.
The brand-new single dives deep into complicated life experiences that formed Flip into the man he is today and shows how far he’s come as a person and an artist. In this song, Flip speaks about the troubles he faced growing up in a single-parent household while using basketball to escape. Flip, who some may know as Phil Houston, was a former Bremerton High School standout and played alongside recently retired 15-year NBA veteran Marvin Williams.
Flip understands that his lyrics have the power to change people’s minds and that his feelings are communicated best through the music he makes. He says, ‘I think people will relate to the real story of growing up in a single-parent household and using sports or their artistic abilities as a way to escape the pain. Also, I feel they will relate to having issues they face that they’re not comfortable speaking to their mother about and they don’t know where to turn for help.’
The artist is excited to share his dynamic vocals and radiant sound with the world this year through vibrantly enticing new singles. ‘Came A Long Way’ is just the beginning. He has the sheer talent needed to put out quality songs that hold up with a timeless style, all while intending to get listeners resonating with his music.
The artist’s musical influences are Jay-Z, Eminem, Drake, Joyner Lucas and Big Sean. He would love to collaborate with J. Cole and E-40.
Flip says that his songwriting process starts with vibing out to the beat for a while and listening to what it has to say. Then, he tries out a few melodies and flows that might match the style the best and adds the lyrics. Usually, the artist just lets his emotions and what he is feeling at that moment do the writing for him.
The artist is planning to release another EP at the end of this year, so fans should definitely look forward to that.
Flip thinks that social media is a direct line of communication with his fans and more personal. People nowadays want to see an artist’s personality and like them or be interested in them as a person, most of the time. If they like something about you, they are more likely to connect with your music.
The artist appreciates all the streams, likes and listens from his fans. ‘It means a lot to me that you take time out of your day to listen to what I have to say and I do not take that for granted. I feel they are just as much a part of the process as I am and I’m thankful for it.’
