‘Sideline’ by Desmond Parson (feat. Sha’Dava): a song about lovers who can’t be together
Born in Washington D.C. in the mid 70’s, Desmond Parson’s interest in music peaked at the age of 4 when his grandmother would play albums by Gladys Knight and Teddy Pendergrass. However, it was one artist in particular that would forever change his understanding of music, Stevie Wonder. From joining singing groups in high school to presently directing his own band, Soulfied Village, Desmond’s musical journey is ever-evolving.
The song ‘Sideline’ is heavily inspired by the Neo-Soul legends like Erykah Badu and Jill Scott. This was a song Desmond created at the Rhodes piano, his go-to keyboard for most of my music. As the songwriting progressed, the artist thought it would be nice to have two points of view, regarding the relationship statuses in the song, that is why Sha’Dava sings the second verse and enhances the song with her vocals. ‘Sideline’ is about two lovers who cannot fully commit to one another as they are in other relationships. Desmond believes that this song is easy to relate to because of how often situations like that happen in real life.
The artist’s musical influences include Michael Jackson, Prince, and, of course, Stevie Wonder. Desmond listens to Wonder’s music all the time because ‘his music has the ability to cross genres and ethnicities, as well as take me to places in my mind I’ve never been before.’
Since producing all of the songs himself, the artist’s song-writing process usually starts with creating music. After that he usually allows the music itself to dictate what the subject matter will be and starts working on the hook or chorus.
Desmond reveals that his EP will be released in the second half of 2021 and he can’t wait to perform in one of his favourite places – the New Deal Café on the outskirts of Washington DC.
The artist likes to connect with his fans and followers on social media and sends them a warm message: ‘Thank you so much for investing your time and energy into me and my music. I greatly appreciate each and every one of you!’.
