INTERVIEW: A Flock Of Seagulls

1Years after becoming known for a smash hit and pronounced new wave haircuts, A Flock of Seagulls continue to entertain crowds. The band is also preparing for the release of a new album with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, “Ascension”. The album comes out at the end of the month, and the band will be playing Summerfest shortly after. We caught up with Mike Score of A Flock of Seagulls to learn more:

B&E: The original lineup is reunited and you guys have a new album this year! Tell us what spurred the reunion?

MS: It was August Day Recordings’ idea. They asked if it could be done, and we said yes. But we never met to make the album. We recorded all of our parts in separate studios.

B&E: Is there a little rust, or do you feel that you guys are picking back up where you left off?

MS: The original band have not played any shows together for 15 yrs or so, but my version of the band tours all the time.

B&E: The new album features tracks from your first three albums with the Prague Philharmonic. How did that collaboration come about?

MS: We were asked to do it. Tech circumstances of today meant it was quite easy to do in separate studios.

B&E: How did it feel to hear your work take on such a grand sound for the first time?

MS: Hearing the orchestra was different. Not like I imagined. A whole new take on Seagulls’ songs.

B&E: More importantly, do you like the original version of “I Ran” better, or the orchestral version?

MS: The song “I ran “ has a life of its own. Sounds good both ways to me.

B&E: Finally, if you could collaborate with any other artist on the Summerfest lineup, who would you pick?

MS: I never think about collaborating on songs or with other artists.

You can catch A Flock of Seagulls at 4:00 on July 1st at the U.S. Cellular Connection Stage.
