Big Beat MKE: Opening Round Night 2 Recap

A rainy night didn’t stop a crowd from coming out for night two of the opening round of Big Beat MKE this week, and the four producers that we had certainly weren’t holding back either.

In the opening battle, MystiK Musik brought some bangers to the table, but Hot Science countered with the first live production entry into the contest, making beats live on his sampler. In the first of two battles of the night, our resident DJ for the night, Alpine, declared that he overrode everyone and wanted an overtime round. That ended up being one of the coolest moments of the tournament so far, as MystiK MusiK went so far as to sample Hot Science’s own album with a beat that called him out on the track. In the end, Hot Science prevailed though, moving onto the quarterfinals.

The second battle of the evening was definitely main event worthy, as Ag Da Gift and Elete Trax went head to head. Elete Trax may be the Cinderella story of the tournament, as he made it into the top 16 due to another producer having to drop out of the competition. Though the crowd probably already wanted it, your Big Beat MKE host, Twan Mack of Kareem City, declared an “OG Override”, and called for an overtime round as well. The crowd was very vocally divided on the winner, but according to the judges, Elete Trax picked up a big upset in round one.

The night was also accented by performances from WillTheGlide and the New Wave Outlawz, who both brought some energy to the Jackalope Lounj stage. Be sure to come down to the Third Ward next Thursday night, as Dumros faces Main.Key, and SML8 battles against KD in the third night of opening round competition, as well as performances from Genesis Renji and AWillThaGreat.
