Review: She Looks So Perfect by 5 Seconds Of Summer

I’m sure most of you have started noticing Australia’s 5 Seconds Of Summer’s steady rise in the mainstream. If you have no idea than I will fill you in. Four good looking dudes with great hair formed a band and posted covers on youtube. After seeing their talent and potential, Louis from One Direction loved them enough that they had 5SOS open for them on their 2013 tour. Because of this, the kids loved them (for their music of course) and the hype train was at full steam ahead. It wasn’t till 2014 till we got to hear their very first single, titled She Looks So Perfect, after signing with Capital Records. Trust me when I say you will love and hate this song. Before we jump ahead into the review, have a look and listen at the song/music video.

Well….that music video sure was interesting. I guess no matter how bad or average life seems just take off your clothes and dance…um, oh yeah! Onwards to the actual song.

It starts off with a nice catchy build up from all instruments followed by Luke Hemmings impressive vocals. You may notice that the production definitely has that One Direction vibe to it, especially when it comes to the vocals. However, this is not bad because it’s well balanced. All the instruments sound smooth and don’t outweigh each other. The lyrics are of course that bubblegum gotta have this girl charm to them. It’s a pop song so calm down.

..and then the infamous chorus comes in.

“You look so perfect standing there in my American Apparel underwear and I know now, that I’m so down. Your lipstick stain is a work of art. I got your name tattooed in an arrow heart and I know now, that I’m so down”

Ok, so the last few lines are fine but American Apparel underwear? It’s almost like this whole song is one big advertisement. It’s seriously so bad that it almost ruined the song for me when I first heard it. Also the said female is wearing his underwear? Nice and subtle.  It just doesn’t fit well with the rest of the lyrics and could (should) have been easily rewritten. However, I have to give Luke props for having the balls to sing that line with all he’s got.

At the end of the day, She Looks So Perfect is a fun and super catchy pop song for the summer. Will it be remembered? Most likely not but it’s still lots of fun and leaves me with a nostalgic feeling. 5SOS seemed to be influenced strongly by 2007 pop rock and power pop which is fantastic. Put it through the 1D filter and you have them. We’ll see what the world has in store for Luke, Michael, Calum, and Ashton when their debut album arrives June 27th.

She Looks So Perfect gets a 3 out of 5.
