AUDIO: Core REX – “Gemini+”

Chicago-based hip hop artist Core REX has his highly-anticipated new album out. Corresponding with the striking artwork, REX shares an elegant exhibition of artful rap cuts that convert broken emotions into cries for love. He expresses in the intro that creative expression is all we have to cope with the internal and external evils of consciousness, and he elaborates on these sentiments using alternative production techniques that incorporate moody guitars and melancholy vocal effects. His colleagues Ishaan and Ibra make appearances on “Ultra” and “Tangent,” respectively. We can imagine Core REX came face-to-face with immense vulnerability on this record, confronting the obstacles that come with finding the exact way you want to say something. We hope to bring him up to Milwaukee for shows in the future.

AUDIO: Nate Barksdale – “Bedroom (feat. Core Rex)”

Chicago-based neo-soul artist Nate Barksdale’s latest joint is unlike anything he’s done thus far. Co-written by his friend Core Rex, the song shimmers with neon psychedelia and avant-pop sensibility. Barksdale compares his bedroom to a magical, serene place but ultimately gives someone the choice of whether or not they’d like to enter his world. While suggestive, the song is a unique avenue down initiation of intimacy, and we look forward to what else Nate Barksdale has in the chamber.
