Big Beat MKE Returns for 2026 With a New Venue and Format!

Big Beat MKE, Milwaukee’s premier beat battle tournament hosted by Breaking And Entering, will return for its seventh year this spring with a new home and an expanded format.

The 2026 competition will pit 16 producers in a head-to-head tournament at The Cooperage, 822 S. Water St., on Thursday nights throughout May. The event will still be free and open to the public for attendees 21 and older.

This year’s competition will span four weeks, beginning with opening-round battles on May 7 and May 14. The quarterfinals will take place May 21, with the semifinals and finals both scheduled for May 28.

New for 2026, the event will feature an earlier start time of 8 p.m. and four battles per night, doubling the action from previous years. DJ Topher will provide music at each event, joined by Milwaukee performers throughout the tournament.

“Finding a new home and format for Big Beat MKE became important when you look at the live music landscape in 2026” said Allen Halas, owner of Breaking And Entering. “We think that making these adjustments are going to provide a live experience unlike anything we’ve ever done up to this point, and we can’t wait to get things started on what is going to be our biggest year yet.”

A beat battle consists of three one-minute rounds, where producers take turns playing original beats before judges and the crowd determine who is moving on to the next round. No vocals are allowed, other than samples.  Fans can vote on the winners via QR codes throughout the venue.

Big Beat MKE continues the tradition of beat battles in Milwaukee, carrying on the legacy of the Miltown Beatdown. The competition celebrates the city’s producers and creative talent across hip hop, electronic music, and beyond.

Founded in 2018 at The Wicked Hop, Big Beat MKE has grown into an annual showcase for Milwaukee’s music production community.

Producers interested in competing can submit their music beginning March 1 at BreakingAndEntering.net/BigBeatMKE. Submissions will remain open throughout March, before a competition committee of Milwaukee musicians, media, and tastemakers determine the final 16 producers, who will be announced at a later date.
