Sam Smith and Christian Cowan Turn the 2026 Met Gala Steps Into an Erté Masterpiece

If the Met Gala is fashion’s Super Bowl, then Sam Smith and Christian Cowan just ran the ball straight into the end zone — in head-to-toe couture, no less.

The GRAMMY-winning singer and the New York-based designer (and Smith’s partner) arrived on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 4, 2026, for their third joint appearance at the Costume Institute Benefit. And rather than play it safe, the duo went full art-history seminar, with custom looks by Christian Cowan inspired by the legendary 1920s illustrator Erté — the pioneering artist whose work routinely graced the cover of Vogue and helped define the intersection of art and fashion.

In a nod to this year’s “Costume Art” theme, both looks channeled Erté’s signature language of graphic silhouette and bold, theatrical presence. Sam’s sweeping cocoon coat was adorned with more than 230,000 crystals and beads, brought to life through 800 hours of meticulous handwork by a team of 45 artisans. Read that sentence again. Eight hundred hours.

Christian Cowan, never one to be outdone on his own design, complemented the moment in sharp 1920s beaded tailoring featuring more than 25,000 hand-applied bugle beads. Sam topped the look with a custom headpiece created in collaboration with iconic milliner Stephen Jones, paired with high jewelry by Cartier.

Cowan has become a global force in eveningwear since launching his eponymous label, dressing the likes of Lady Gaga, Zendaya, Jenna Ortega, Jessie Buckley, and Beyoncé. Sam, meanwhile, continues to cement their status as one of the most celebrated artists of the modern era — a five-time GRAMMY winner with Oscar, Golden Globe, and BRIT honors, two Guinness World Records, and a catalog that has racked up more than 84 billion career streams.

While we’re still recovering from the sheer crystal count, revisit Sam Smith’s critically acclaimed album GLORIA — the record Rolling Stone called “their deepest album yet” — on Spotify:
