Backline Drops Free EDM Mental Health Toolkit, Taps Kaleena Zanders to Lead Artist Testimonial Series

If you’ve ever wondered who’s looking out for the people pulling all-nighters behind the decks while the rest of the world is asleep, the answer — increasingly — is Backline. The national nonprofit just kicked off Mental Health Awareness Month by officially launching its EDM Mental Health Toolkit, a free, no-strings-attached resource built specifically for the artists, producers, managers, crew, and superfans who keep the electronic music ecosystem spinning.

The toolkit, which soft-launched at Miami Music Week in late March during the 2026 Femmy Awards, is exactly what it sounds like: a practical playbook for a scene that runs on sunrise sets, red-eye flights, and very little sleep. It covers tour prep, post-tour re-entry, substance use and harm reduction, support for sobriety, nutrition, self-care, and regular mental health check-ins. In other words, it meets ravers and road warriors where they actually live — not where a clinical brochure assumes they live.

“Music is therapeutic, but in live electronic it’s also a lot of late nights, early mornings, sets until sunrise and then flying to the next city,” says Backline Co-founder and Executive Director Hilary Gleason. “Backline is committed to taking care of the artists and community who are so generous with their time and talent, and we designed these tools to meet the EDM scene where they are with specific resources for their unique needs.”

FEMME HOUSE Co-founder and Artist-In-Chief LP Giobbi echoed the sentiment when the toolkit previewed in Miami, calling it “a resource that meets this community with real, practical support” and a natural extension of the work being done to build a more equitable, sustainable dance music industry.

To mark the official rollout, Backline has partnered with electronic musician and experimental vocalist Kaleena Zanders on an artist-led testimonial series designed to put real faces and real stories behind the resource. Zanders is the first artist up, and her debut video, “Preparing for Tour with Kaleena Zanders,” walks viewers through how she personally uses the toolkit’s framework to stay grounded before hitting the road.

The numbers behind the mission are sobering. Suicide rates among male musicians are nearly 10x the national average, 73% of independent musicians report symptoms of mental illness, and 8.3% of respondents in Backline’s 2025 poll reported suicidal thoughts last year. Since 2019, Backline has invested $3.5 million into mental health and wellness in the music industry and served 84,000 people. In January, the organization launched B-LINE, a 24/7 crisis support line built exclusively for the music industry — reachable by calling 1-855-BLINE99 or texting 254-639.

The EDM Toolkit complements Backline’s broader suite of services, which includes one-on-one case management, therapy grants, tour support, and wellness offerings like mindfulness and yoga. The point isn’t to hand anyone a rulebook — it’s to hand them options.

The EDM Mental Health Toolkit is available to read and download now at backline.care. Whether you’re an artist prepping for a festival run, a manager juggling six time zones, or a fan who just wants to look out for the friend next to you on the rail, this one’s worth bookmarking.
