Jacob Hackworth Shatters Country Radio Records With Debut Single “What Took You So Long”

Nashville’s worst-kept secret just became Country radio’s biggest story. Jacob Hackworth — the West Plains, Missouri-born songwriter behind some of the genre’s biggest recent hits — officially made his Country radio debut this week with “What Took You So Long,” and he didn’t just step into the format. He kicked the door clean off the hinges.

The Mercury Nashville/Goat Island Sound artist landed a staggering 128 first-week stations, including a record-breaking 96 adds on impact. That’s the highest one-week total for a new artist’s debut single in Country Aircheck/Mediabase add board history. Yes, history. Hackworth is also No. 1 Most Added at Country radio this week, a debut so emphatic it makes most rollouts look like a soundcheck.

For anyone who’s been paying attention to Nashville’s writing rooms, this isn’t exactly a shock — it’s more like a long-overdue introduction. Hackworth has roughly 60 major label cuts to his name, including Bailey Zimmerman’s six-week No. 1 “Rock and a Hard Place,” Corey Kent’s “This Heart,” three songs on Jelly Roll’s GRAMMY-winning Beautifully Broken, Morgan Wallen’s “Jack and Jill,” and six tracks on Tucker Wetmore’s debut album, including the breakout “Wine Into Whiskey.” The man crossed the billion-streams mark as a songwriter in 2025 alone. The pen has been working overtime; now the mic is finally getting its turn.

“My mind is absolutely blown,” Hackworth said. “Thank you so much to Country radio for believing in this song. It’s been an incredible time getting to know y’all these past few months — y’all are changing my life, right before my eyes. I’ve got the best team in the world. Thank you so much to the Mercury team and Goat Island, y’all are the GOATs. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude right now. This is wild.”

Damon Moberly, SVP, Promotion & Touring at MCA, called it the kind of alignment every label chases. “This is one of those moments where the artist, the song, and the team all come together in a big way. ‘What Took You So Long’ is a special record, and Jacob is an undeniable talent. I’m incredibly proud of the work Jacob and our team put in to set this up and thankful to our radio partners for the early belief.” For the record nerds: the previous add board record was also held by the MCA/Mercury Nashville promotion teams. Dynasty behavior.

Written by Hackworth alongside Jaxson Free, Steph Jones, and Daniel Ross, “What Took You So Long” pairs modern Country production with the kind of rough-hewn, character-driven storytelling that has become Hackworth’s calling card. It’s a track that translates cleanly from a writers’ round to a stadium PA — emotionally direct, melodically sticky, and built for the long haul on the dial.

The momentum traces back to last month’s “Team MCA at the Ryman” showcase during Country Radio Seminar (CRS), where Hackworth previewed the single for programmers and executives and walked out with the room firmly in his corner. Before that, his 2025 trio of releases — “When I Don’t,” “You Ain’t,” and “Bad As I Do” — landed him on multiple 2026 “Artist to Watch” lists from Country Now, Country Minute, Fort Nash, and beyond.

Hackworth’s path to this moment is the kind of story Country music was built on: choir kid turned railroad worker turned bar-band frontman, who moved to Nashville in 2019, paid the bills working at iconic Nashville bars, Amazon, and even DJing on a party boat before a 2022 publishing deal cracked the door open. He recently wrapped a run on the road with Tucker Wetmore and is currently working on new music ahead of his Red Rocks debut in October.

If this is the debut, the rest of the rollout is going to be must-watch television. Add Jacob Hackworth to your playlists, your radio presets, and your “told-you-so” list — preferably in that order.
