Pagan metal warriors VARG are sharpening their blades for the release of their very first live album, and if the latest offering is any indication, the wolf pack is about to feast. The Coburg-based German crew just unleashed “Blutaar,” the third single from the forthcoming Live at Wolfszeit Festival 2024, out May 22 via Napalm Records.

Originally the title track of their 2010 sophomore album, “Blutaar” has always been one of VARG’s darkest creations — a menacing dive into a medieval torture ritual. In this live incarnation, captured at the band’s own Wolfszeit Festival, frontman Freki sounds like he’s channeling something genuinely feral. Bathed in deep red stage lighting (a tasteful substitute for actual blood, we suppose), the track is fueled by thunderous drums and the fervent roar of a crowd that clearly came to worship.

“‘Blutaar’ is one of the darkest and most intense songs we ever wrote,” the band shares. “It’s about a brutal but simultaneously captivating execution ritual. Played live, it unfolds with its very own force — more raw, more direct, and emotionally even more gripping.”

Live at Wolfszeit Festival 2024 is a 16-track odyssey through VARG’s discography, stretching from 2008’s “Aufzug der Heere” and “Schildfront” all the way to “Ewige Wacht,” the title track from their 2023 chart-topping record. Filmed with 13 cameras and mixed with crystalline clarity, the release captures a band at the absolute peak of their powers. Expect fire, thunderous choirs, ritualistic light installations, and genuinely beautiful vocal interplay between Freki’s growls and singer Fylgja’s clean harmonies on cuts like “Morgenrot” and the rare live gem “Fylgja.”
