Couch Returns Home: Boston Marathon Headline Set, Earth Day Vinyl & Debut LP ‘Big Talk’ Out Now
Boston’s favorite sofa-turned-stage-act is back on home turf. Couch, the seven-piece indie-pop outfit that spent the last year turning small-club buzz into a 40-city international headline tour, returned to Boston this week to headline the Boston Marathon’s Official Afterparty on Patriots’ Day and relaunch their annual Earth Day partnership with local nonprofit Mass Audubon. In true Couch fashion, they found a way to throw a citywide party and give back at the same time.
The Marathon Monday set was a love letter to the city that raised them. The band leaned fully into Boston lore, packing their headline set with local nods, high-energy moments, and surprise cameos from hometown icons Wally the Green Monster, Tessie, and Patriot Pat, who all joined the group onstage. “Getting to be part of Marathon Monday in Boston, after everything this past year has been, was surreal,” the band shared. “There’s nothing like this city showing up the way it does.”
It’s a fitting full-circle moment. The hometown show capped an international run in support of their debut album Big Talk, a record The Boston Globe says “cements Couch as one of Boston’s most promising additions to the national music industry.” Along the way, they made their national television debut on CBS and sold out Roadrunner — becoming the first fully self-managed, independent band to fill the 3,500-capacity Boston venue. Not bad for a group of high school and college friends who started out recording remotely during lockdown.
For the second consecutive year, Couch is channeling that momentum into their Earth Day partnership with Mass Audubon. All proceeds from a newly announced limited-edition Earth Day vinyl release will go directly toward Mass Audubon’s work addressing climate change, protecting wildlife, and expanding equitable access to nature across Massachusetts. It’s a deliberate move from a band that has been intentional about using its growing platform to lift up the community that built them.
Fronted by Tema Siegel and rounded out by Zach Blankstein (guitar), Jared Gozinsky (drums), Will Griffin (bass), Danny Silverston (keys), Jeffrey Pinsker-Smith (trumpet), and Eric Tarlin (saxophone), Couch trade in a swirl of modern pop boldness, vintage instrumentation, interlocking grooves, live horns, and layered harmonies — a sound best understood live, or at full volume on a turntable.
