Toronzo Cannon Brings His Blistering Chicago Blues to Milwaukee’s Shank Hall on May 22

If you’re anywhere near Milwaukee on Friday, May 22, you’d be doing yourself a serious disservice by not catching Toronzo Cannon and his band The Chicago Way at Shank Hall. The award-winning Chicago bluesman — a former CTA bus driver turned bonafide blues ambassador — is bringing his electrifying live show to the intimate Farwell Avenue venue, and if his reputation precedes him (spoiler: it very much does), it’s going to be a night to remember.

Cannon has spent years earning his stripes as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary blues. With ten Blues Music Award nominations under his belt and co-signs from the likes of Gary Clark Jr. (“Toronzo is a beast. He lights the room up”) and Joe Bonamassa (“Toronzo’s a great guitar player, excellent vocalist and an amazing personality”), the man has nothing left to prove — but he keeps proving it anyway.

His 2024 Alligator Records album, Shut Up & Play!, is a masterclass in modern blues songwriting. Co-produced with Alligator president Bruce Iglauer, the record delivers 11 emotionally charged originals that range from the gut-punch of “I Hate Love” to the gospel-tinged autobiography of “Had To Go Through It To Get To It.” Cannon’s guitar work is as inventive as ever — drawing from a lineage that includes Hound Dog Taylor, Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix — but it’s his storytelling that really sets him apart.

“I write what I know, what I feel,” Cannon says. “This record is about the things going on in my life since 2019 — it’s a document of what I’ve seen and been through, but the stories are universal.”

Guitar World nailed it when they called him “among the most inspiring southpaws to ever pick up a six-string,” and Living Blues praised his “lyrics full of wisdom laced with humor and life-toughened resolve.” The man channels the weight of the Windy City into every note and every word.

Cannon has taken his Chicago blues across the globe — from festivals across the U.S. to stages in China, Japan, the UK, Canada, and beyond. He’s played the Chicago Blues Festival on ten separate occasions, each appearance drawing tens of thousands to their feet. As he puts it: “I feel like I’ve become an ambassador for Chicago blues. People expect a lot from me. But it’s good, because I’m forced to keep upping my game.”

And then there’s this gem, which might be the most Chicago blues thing anyone has ever said: “You don’t choose the blues. The blues chooses you.”
