SaraEllen Doesn’t Play Around On “Doll Parts”


There are many things going on on “Doll Parts”, SaraEllen’s most recently released single, which touched down at the top of the year.

All of them, as in every last one, are clear shot winners.

The pace is set to perfection with the drums, which are a programmed wonder. The snare itself almost sounds flammed, but hits with a precision that simply sounds good. Plus, somebody’s rolling other types of snares in there, so that they all meld together with a smoothness that’s palpable to even the casual listener.

The keys are nothing less than outstanding on this number and, as this reviewer suspects, yet is unable to confirm, may well be attributed to SaraEllen herself. The artist is credited with mixing and producing the number alongside Sam Welch. The keyboard chords have a sense of gravity that is perhaps the counterpoint to the ever-moving, seemingly evolving drums. It makes the track perfect for musing which, naturally, lends itself to SaraEllen’s vocals.

On this affair, her style is one that is undeniably jazz. The way she hits her lines, she damn near sounds like she’s improvising or ad-libbing them right there in the booth. Plus, she’s got a way of halting just before dropping them, giving the cut a natural feel that’s organic and accessible. She also invokes a huge dosage of anaphora, repeating phrases at the timeliest junctures, the way a trumpeter or saxophonist might stutter-step in place when getting to a favorite passage on a song.

It’s something to behold her vocals, which are that impressionable and memorable. It transforms this tune into one that’s got a sense of timelessness, or at least that which goes back to the early parts of the 20th century when The Music (jazz) was still on the cutting pulse of life itself.

That’s just what SaraEllen makes you feel as you run through this number, which only clocks in at barely three and a half minutes. However, when all of that time is spent doing things right, it’s more than well worth it.
