RECAP: Lollapalooza 2024, Day One
Lollapalooza 2024 kicked off from Grant Park in Chicago on Thursday, and a day threatened with storms ended up creating a damp, high heat. There was certainly no easing into this year’s festival, from the weather standpoint or on stage. There were plenty of big names and surprises, but one clear standout who’s having the summer of a lifetime. Here’s some of the highlights:
Everyone knew the main attraction of the opening day of Lollapalooza. Mette played early on the T-Mobile stage, benefiting from early Chappell Roan fans making their way into the main stage area to get a good spot. To her credit, she brought her own dance party, and even played a few seconds of “Hot To Go,” prompting everyone in the crowd to do the dance associated with the song.

BigXThaPlug is definitely a star living in his moment. While he packed a big crowd earlier in the summer at Summerfest, his set at the IHG Hotels stage brought a crowd in early, under the direct sun. That didn’t stop kids from starting mosh pits and bouncing along to every track. BigX also debuted a new song, “The Biggest,” that sounds like it’s going to be his next breakout.

It’s Chappell Roan‘s world, and we’re just living in it. The day was filled with Pink Pony Club members walking around Grant Park, and an estimated 80,000 people flooded the T-Mobile main stage to watch her set. Complete with a wrestling ring on stage, Chappell came out dressed as a luchador, before playing a set full of material from “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” with the crowd singing and dancing and hanging on her every word. Considering that her set was moved to the main stage, but still on relativity early in the day, it’s safe to say that she is a headliner the next time she’s at Lollapalooza. However, the park may be too small for her by the next time the opportunity comes up.

In terms of the official headliners of the night, both main stages offered up something completely different. Over on the Bud Light stage, Hozier made a large crowd under the Chicago skyline feel intimate. The threat of severe weather loomed, and his set made for a fitting soundtrack as the sky darkened and lightning flashed in the distance over the crowd. Closing on “Take Me To Church” after a brief downpour only aided the song’s moody atmosphere.

On the opposite side of Grant Park, Megan Thee Stallion made the absolute most out of replacing Tyler, The Creator as a headliner. She and a team of backup dancers gave Chicago a litany of hits in her hour long set, most of which getting plenty a posterior in motion for what could only be described as a marathon of twerking. To up the ante, Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky also made a brief cameo on stage, hyping the crowd up even more. At the end of her non-stop set, Megan thanked the crowd, sitting on the stage on the verge of joyful tears while her backup dancers piled onto the Houston rapper. Considering that she wasn’t the original choice for the night’s main act, it was a win all the way around for the festival and Megan.
