AUDIO: Tontine Ensemble – “Fermen”

Improvisational-classical string quartet Tontine Ensemble released a new album. It’s nine compositions that entail the musicians exploring eruptive spontaneity amongst themselves, living up to the record’s title. There’s moments of profound suspense, frantic tension and calm between sonic storms with each track invoking the imagery suggested by its name; “Arachnid” gracefully motions like a spider in a web and “Unboxing” indeed sounds like the musicians are cutting through parcels. Tontine Ensemble create an ardent contemporary classical exhibition with “Fermen.”

Classical-improvisational string quartet Tontine Ensemble are out with a new album. Together the four musicians – violinist Allen Russell, violist Molly Lieberman, cellist Pat Reinholz, and double bassist Barry Paul Clark – explore planes of harmonic expression, communicating with one another through thematic determination. With a knack for discovery while also clinging to familiarity when necessary, Tontine Ensemble carefully and intentionally construct musical passages that feel subtle as they do dynamic.
