This week’s Milwaukee Artist of the Week is BKnitts, a newcomer in the Milwaukee scene with a developing sound to match. Originally rapping just for the fun of rapping, BKnitts made the decision to focus on honing his craft, and the end result is a slew of mixtapes, including his latest release, H.Y.P.E.. Standing for “Hail Youth, Praise Elan”, H.Y.P.E. is BKnitts fifth complete release, and arguably his strongest yet. Featuring 16 tracks (and not one skit), the entire project gives you a solid glimpse of BKnitts’ personality. On standout tracks like “Ridin’ Round”, he is able to take a laid back beat, Houston-esque chopped and screwed hook, and still put down a lyrical verse over the top. On every track, including “Where The Wild Things Are”, which clocks in at 1:16 total, he brings the lyricism. It’s always nice to see an emcee that refuses to take the easy route when it comes to his or her tracks.
What’s really great about H.Y.P.E. is that in a rap landscape that isn’t necessarily about lyrics anymore, BKnitts put out a 16 track, head nod worthy, lyrical release. This mixtape has substance, which a lot of new releases seem to lack. Armed with collaborations from substance-conscious artists Klassik, GSnaps, and many more, this is a true hip-hop release. Purist, backpack rap fans can find something to groove to on this, and trap fans can also play this without getting bored. Whether this is by design, wonderful accident, or a combination of the two, there’s no denying that H.Y.P.E. is a solid release from front to back. Stream it via Bandcamp below:
