This week’s Milwaukee Artist of the Week is Tweed Funk, a standout in the Milwaukee music scene for many different reasons. For starters, there aren’t a lot of bands playing funk music in Milwaukee, much less writing their own material. While their live set may include covers, the group still works in their own songs, giving fans a mix of something familiar and Tweed Funk’s expansion on that sound.
Tweed Funk is also a standout because they probably play more shows in a year than any other band that writes their own music in Milwaukee. This week alone, they are playing five shows, including The Chicago Blues Festival, Chill on the Hill in Bay View, and an appearance on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee. In total, they’ll be playing 30 shows this summer, including both Summerfest and the Wisconsin State Fair. With an impressive number of shows under their belt, and years of traveling around the country to play, the band is definitely tight. From their performances, you can see that Tweed Funk really has the whole package; sound, stage presence, and charisma. They also have bit of hardware to show off for their work, as well; Frontman Joseph “Smokey” Holman picked up Male Vocalist of the Year and bassist Eric Madunic won Bass Player of the Year at this year’s WAMI Awards. They’ve also had national success, charting on the Roots Music Report Blues Charts with both of their albums. With a strong touring schedule ahead of them for the rest of the year, make sure that you get the chance to check out Tweed Funk when they’ll be in your area.
