Multi-instrument percussionist Mike Neumeyer returned with new music recently, inspired by a recent trip to Hawaii for an album titled “HI-Lights.” While on a trip to the islands, Neumeyer and Thomas Mackay recorded a series of improvisational jams, with the final result being the album. Neumeyer and Mackay utilized a mallekat and vibraphone for the improv tracks, and you can hear the two working off of one another’s tones throughout the recordings. The influence of the island rhythm, or perhaps the frantic nature of traveling come into play, with perpetual tracks that feel like movement when you hear them in this setting.
